# The Epsom Salt Stump Myth: What Sources Do and Do Not Say

The Iowa State and Illinois Extension pages we opened do not list Epsom salt as a stump treatment. Illinois Extension says chemical treatment speeds decay by about 25%, while improving natural decay can reach 50%. Drilled holes, nitrogen, moisture and a cover are the steps they back.

## Where does the Epsom salt stump tip come from?

It is a common home remedy: drill holes in a stump, pour in Epsom salt and water, and wait for it to rot. It circulates widely online. This post checks it against two university extension pages instead of repeating it.

Neither page names Epsom salt. That is a limit of the sources, not proof that salt never does anything. It does mean there is no university finding here to back the tip.

## What do the extension pages say instead?

Both pages talk about chemicals and decay, just not Epsom salt. Illinois Extension says “Unfortunately, chemically treating your tree stump will not liquify it overnight.” Its example ingredient is potassium nitrate, also called saltpeter. It says the salt pulls water out of the stump, which helps it dry faster for burning, and that salts are also “detrimental to the living decay organisms that decompose tree stumps.”

Then it gives numbers: “According to Dr. Coder, chemical treatment speeds up decomposition by about 25%, whereas enhancing natural decay (by increasing surface area, soil aeration, moisture, and nitrogen availability) can accelerate degradation by up to 50%.”

Iowa State Extension says commercial stump products “tend to simply be a form of fertilizer (often potassium or sodium nitrates), so regular fertilizers can work just as well.”

Claim

What the opened pages say

Epsom salt rots a stump

Not listed on either page

Chemical treatment helps

About 25% faster, per Illinois Extension citing Dr. Coder

Better natural decay

Up to 50% faster, same source

Stump products

Tend to be fertilizer; regular fertilizer can work as well (Iowa State)

Herbicide poured into holes

Only leaches into the soil (Iowa State)

## What speeds up stump decay?

Add surface area, nitrogen and moisture, then cover the stump. Iowa State Extension says to cut the stump low, drill one-inch holes at least ten inches deep, fill them with slow-release fertilizer and cover the stump with soil or sod. Then “the stump can usually be easily broken up and removed with a sharp spade after one to three years.”

Illinois Extension adds aerating the soil, keeping it moist but drained and using a permeable cover rather than plastic sheeting. ## Will any home remedy stop a stump from sprouting?

Rotting a stump and stopping sprouts are different jobs. Iowa State Extension says herbicides with glyphosate, triclopyr or imazapyr applied to the living cambium right after cutting can reduce resprouting. Follow the product label. For stumps that regrow, read [will a stump grow back](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/will-a-stump-grow-back) and [tree roots, stumps and regrowth](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/tree-roots-stumps-regrowth).

## How should I read a home remedy claim?

Check who tested it. Illinois Extension opens its stump guide with this: “The internet is full of tricks for dealing with tree stumps. Some sound practical, while others seem dangerous.” Its author then sorts them by what physical removal, on-site treatment and doing nothing can do.

A claim backed by a university page lists steps, amounts and timing. The Epsom salt tip, as repeated online, usually does not. When a source gives a time range, such as one to three years or 10 or more, plan around the range. The guide on [stump killer](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/does-stump-killer-work) applies the same test to store-bought products.

Question to ask

Why it matters

Does a university or agency page name the method?

Epsom salt is not named on the two pages opened here

Does it give amounts and timing?

Iowa State gives 4 ounces of fertilizer per hole and one to three years

Does it warn about side effects?

Illinois warns that fuel and heat can harm the soil

Does it say to follow the label?

Both pages say to use products as directed

## What if I do not want to wait?

Waiting is the cost of every rot method. Iowa State Extension says natural decay can take 10 or more years, and a professional grinder removes a stump “within a matter of hours.” Compare the choices in [stump grinding vs stump removal](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/stump-grinding-vs-stump-removal).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Epsom salt kill a tree stump?

The extension pages opened for this post do not say so. Iowa State Extension says herbicides applied to the cut surface right after cutting can reduce resprouting, and that herbicide poured into holes later only leaches into the soil. Follow the product label.

### Is the Epsom salt tip a myth?

It is unsupported by the extension pages we opened, which does not prove it never does anything. Those pages name drilled holes, nitrogen, moisture and a cover as the steps that speed decay, with a break-up time of one to three years.

### What is the fastest way to remove a stump?

Grinding is the quickest route in the sources opened here. Iowa State Extension says a professional grinder removes the stump within a matter of hours, typically down 8 to 12 inches, while natural decay can take 10 or more years.
