# Bush ash

Bush ash is a thicket of new multi-stemmed shoots that grows from the base of a dead ash tree or stump, as seen in southwest Ohio after emerald ash borer.

Ohio State University's BYGL newsletter reports that ash regeneration became evident in southwest Ohio as early as 2008. New growth came from the basal portions of dead trees and [stumps](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/stump) and formed multi-stemmed "bush ash." The beetle attacked these shoots once the new stems grew thick enough to support larvae.

That kept a supply of beetles going for a time. BYGL says the beetle has since had a reversal of fortune, and some multi-stemmed ash in the southwest part of the state has lost stems to [emerald ash borer](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/emerald-ash-borer). New shoots from a stump are a form of [resprouting](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/resprouting). The guide on [dead ash tree stumps](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/dead-ash-tree-stump) explains options.
