# Locate ticket

A locate ticket is the excavation notification filed with OHIO811, which sends it to registered utilities so they can mark their lines before digging begins.

OHIO811 refers to a dig request as an excavation notification, or ticket. It submits your excavation plans to registered utilities, and they locate and mark their lines. You get a reference number to use with any question about a response.

OHIO811 says the ticket is no longer valid if the markings are destroyed or removed before the project is finished, and you must notify OHIO811 again. Its Near Ticket tool shows planned excavations within 1,000 feet of your location. A ticket covers registered utilities only. Private lines may not be marked, as described under [private utility line](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/private-utility-line). See [OHIO811](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/ohio811) and [positive response](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/positive-response).
