# Resprouting

Resprouting is new shoot growth from the stump or roots of a plant that was cut down, and cutting alone often increases it in bush honeysuckle.

Ohio State University says that simply cutting bush honeysuckle at the base causes prolific sprouting and increases the number of stems. OSU says an effective plan for a mature shrub deadens both the above-ground part and the root system, which removes the chance of sprouting.

OSU also tells landowners to watch treated plants for at least one year. Plants that re-sprout or are not completely killed by the first treatment need a follow-up. In ash trees, resprouting from dead trunks and [stumps](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/stump) is called [bush ash](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/bush-ash). Whether a given stump will send up shoots depends on the plant. The guide on [whether a stump will grow back](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/will-a-stump-grow-back) covers the question.
