# Fungi on stumps

Stump fungi are living organisms, such as mushrooms and conks, that break down dead wood, and they are the main reason a stump rots over time.

Fungi are not plants. They feed on dead wood and break it down. When a stump has mushrooms, brackets or conks, it is usually fruiting bodies of decay fungi growing from the wood.

UC IPM says the fruiting bodies of wood decay fungi, such as mushrooms, brackets, or conks, can help with identification. It also says decay fungi destroy cell wall components, including cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, that make up the woody portion of a tree.

Mushrooms on a stump usually mean decay is already underway. That is part of [natural decay](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/natural-decay). Some fungi attack living trees, so a mushroom cluster on a standing tree is worth an arborist's look. Mushrooms on a stump or chip pile often fade on their own. Grinding removes the wood they feed on. See [mushrooms on tree stumps](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/mushrooms-on-tree-stumps).
