# Tree City USA

Tree City USA is an annual national recognition program from the Arbor Day Foundation that raises awareness of community trees and sets foundational standards for communities of all sizes.

The Arbor Day Foundation says Tree City USA is an annual national recognition program designed to raise awareness of the value of community trees, set foundational standards for communities of all sizes, and celebrate community improvement. The program began in 1976 with 42 communities and now has partners in all 50 states.

A town's recognition does not change what a homeowner must do. Rules for a stump on public land come from the town's own [urban forestry](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/urban-forestry) office. Check the Arbor Day Foundation site to confirm whether a given town is listed. See [street tree](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/street-tree) and [public tree work permit](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/public-tree-work-permit). The local pages in the [service area](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/service-area) list each town's tree rules.
