# Tree lawn

The tree lawn is the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street where street trees grow. Cincinnati 311 uses the term for city-maintained public trees.

Cincinnati 311 uses the phrase for its stump removal request. The request is for removing a stump from a public tree, meaning a tree planted in the "right of way" or "tree lawn" that is city-maintained.

That means the stump of a [street tree](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/street-tree) on a tree lawn is usually a city matter. Cincinnati Parks Urban Forestry requires a [public tree work permit](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/public-tree-work-permit) for work on or near a public tree. Other towns use different words and rules. Covington, Kentucky, describes it as the space between the sidewalk and the street and asks for a permit.
