# Urban forestry

Urban forestry is the care of the trees within a city, on public and private land. Dayton defines an urban forest as all trees within a city.

The City of Dayton defines an urban forest as all trees within a city, across all types of land, both public and private. Cincinnati Parks Urban Forestry says its team is responsible for the maintenance of all City street trees, or any trees in a right-of-way.

So city urban forestry offices usually manage [street trees](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/street-tree) and trees in the [right-of-way](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/right-of-way). Private yard trees are generally not in their care. Dayton notes that 70-80% of its [tree canopy](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/tree-canopy) is on private property.
