# How deep does stump grinding go, and how deep should you ask for?

Iowa State Extension says grinders typically take the stump and large lateral roots down 8 to 12 inches. The University of Illinois Extension says depth runs from flush with the soil line to over a foot deep. Deeper grinding often costs more, so choose the depth that fits your plan for the spot.

## Typical range

Iowa State Extension says 8 to 12 inches for the stump and large lateral roots.

## Wide spread

The University of Illinois Extension says depth can run from flush with the soil line to over a foot.

## Deeper costs more

The University of Illinois Extension says that often, the deeper the grind, the more it costs.

## Plan for replanting

Purdue Extension says it can take several years to fully decompose a stump unless it was ground very deeply.

## How deep does stump grinding go?

Stump grinding usually goes 8 to 12 inches below the soil line. Iowa State Extension says grinders will chew away the stump and any large lateral roots, typically down 8 to 12 inches. The University of Illinois Extension gives a wider range, from flush with the soil line to over a foot deep.

So there is no single depth. The real answer is a range, and the number depends on the machine, the stump and what you plan to do with the spot. The full process is in [how stump grinding works](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/how-stump-grinding-works).

Flush to the soil line, to over a foot deep

## What does “flush” or “below grade” mean?

Flush means the ground-up wood is level with the soil surface. [Below grade](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/below-grade) means it is deeper than the surrounding ground. A [flush cut](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/flush-cut) leaves the least room for soil. A deeper cut leaves a larger hole, which you can fill. The term [grinding depth](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/grinding-depth) describes how far under the surface the wood is removed.

The University of Illinois Extension warns that depending on how far down a stump is ground, you may be left with a large hole. That hole holds chips. What happens to the chips is a separate step. Read [what to do with stump grindings](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/what-to-do-with-stump-grindings) for the options.

## Can I ask for a deeper grind?

Yes, you can ask. Say what you plan for the spot when you request a quote. The company then knows whether it needs a shallow cut for a mower or a deeper cut for planting. Whether a company offers a custom depth, and what it charges, is a question for that company. Ask about it when you request your free estimate.

Write down the depth you agree to. A line such as “grind to 10 inches below the soil line” is clearer than “deep enough.” Ohio’s Attorney General advises that a home improvement contract should include a complete description of the work to be done. That advice is general and applies to any written agreement.

## Does a deeper grind cost more?

Often it does. The University of Illinois Extension says that often, the deeper you want a stump ground out, the more it will cost you. Iowa State Extension says arborists will charge by the size of the stump, measuring it at its widest point. Both factors can raise a quote: a wider [stump diameter](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/stump-diameter) and a deeper cut.

Prices vary by company, so this guide does not give one. See [stump grinding cost](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/stump-grinding-cost) for reported prices with their sources. Ask each company what is included.

## What depth makes sense for replanting?

If you want to plant, deeper helps. Purdue Extension says it can take several years to fully decompose a stump unless it was ground very deeply or removed with an excavation machine. Purdue also says the ground over a stump will settle as the remains decay, so plan to add soil. That settling is called [soil settling](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/soil-settling).

For grass, the University of Illinois Extension advises hauling off the chipped debris and filling the hole with quality [topsoil](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/topsoil). It says wood mixed into soil can tie up nitrogen as it breaks down, which makes it hard to grow a lawn. Details are in [can you plant grass after stump grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/can-you-plant-grass-after-stump-grinding) and [can you plant a tree after stump grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/can-you-plant-a-tree-after-stump-grinding).

### Which depth fits which plan?

Your plan

What to ask for

Why

Mow over the spot

A cut below the soil line, with chips raked or hauled

The surface needs to be level and clear.

Plant grass

A deeper cut, chips hauled away, hole filled with topsoil

The University of Illinois Extension recommends this for turf.

Plant a new tree

A deeper cut, and a talk with the company about spacing

Purdue Extension advises against planting new trees or turf directly over a stump.

Leave it for now

Whatever depth the company suggests

Chips will settle either way.

## How can you check the depth after the job?

Measure it yourself and agree on the method up front. Press a ruler or tape measure into the chips at the center of the spot, and compare the number with the depth you asked for. Chips sit loosely, so the reading may be a little off. Ask the company to say how it measures depth: from the original soil line, or from the stump’s cut surface. Those two starting points can differ by several inches.

Take a photo before and after. A photo with a tape measure in frame is the clearest record. If you plan to fill the hole with topsoil, the depth also tells you how much soil to order. The University of Illinois Extension notes you may be left with a large hole, so do not guess the amount of soil. See [how to clean up after stump grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/how-to-clean-up-after-stump-grinding).

## What does the grinder not reach?

The grinder reaches the stump and the large roots near it. Roots farther out and deeper stay in the soil. They break down over time. Iowa State Extension says its 8 to 12 inch figure covers the stump and large lateral roots. For root questions see [should you remove roots after stump grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/should-you-remove-roots-after-stump-grinding) and [exposed surface roots](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/exposed-surface-roots).

## Frequently asked questions

### How deep does a stump grinder go?

Iowa State Extension says professional machines typically grind the stump and large lateral roots down 8 to 12 inches. The University of Illinois Extension says depth can range from flush to the soil line to over a foot. Machine size and the stump itself set the limit.

### How deep should I grind a stump if I want to plant grass?

Deeper grinding leaves more room for soil. The University of Illinois Extension advises hauling off the chipped stump debris and filling the hole with quality topsoil before planting turfgrass. Tell the company your plan before the visit so the depth and cleanup match.

### Does grinding deeper cost more?

Often yes. The University of Illinois Extension says that often, the deeper you want a stump ground out, the more it will cost you. Iowa State Extension adds that arborists charge by the size of the stump. Ask each company how depth changes its quote.

### Does grinding remove all the roots?

No. Iowa State Extension says grinders take the stump and any large lateral roots, typically down 8 to 12 inches. Roots beyond that range and below it stay in the ground and break down over time.
