## Larger grinder

The Barreto E30SGB page listed $239 for 4 hours, $319 per day and $1,021 per week for the same store and date.

Transport, fuel, safety gear, chip cleanup, hole fill and your time are separate from the rental rate.

## How much does a stump grinder rental cost?

Rental centers list stump grinders by the 4 hours, the day and the week. The only rental prices opened for this guide are two Home Depot rental pages, both viewed on October 26, 2026 with the Ellsworth, Maine store (#2408) selected. They are reported prices, not a Cincinnati, Dayton or Northern Kentucky quote.

Both pages carry this line: “Local store prices may vary from those displayed.” The pages also say “estimated pricing will be determined later, but is subject to change,” and that the deposit or total is worked out at checkout. Call a rental center near you before you plan around these numbers.

## What does a rental fee leave out?

The fee covers the machine, not the job. Plan for these costs, which the rental pages do not price:

1. Getting the grinder to your yard. The Toro page lists the machine at 103 lb and says its foldable handle allows transport in an SUV or minivan.
2. Fuel for the engine.
3. Eye protection, a face shield, hearing protection and long pants, which the Dosko manual calls for.
4. Raking out the [wood chips](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/wood-chips) afterward and hauling them away.
5. Filling the hole with [topsoil](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/topsoil), and the settling that follows.
6. Your time, including the pickup and return.

Iowa State Extension says “most arborists will not remove this material unless it is requested,” and that the hole “will only be filled if requested,” with both services typically costing extra. A DIY job has the same cleanup, with you as the crew.

## What size grinder do I need?

Match the machine to the stump. The Toro 22600 page calls the grinder “perfect for small stumps and areas with tight access.” Its specifications list a maximum below-grade cut of 10 inches and a maximum above-grade cut of 10 inches.

The Barreto E30SGB costs more per day. This guide did not open a size limit for it, so check the machine details with the rental center. A stump wider than the machine can handle, or a stump with large [lateral roots](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/lateral-roots), may need a bigger grinder or a longer rental. Iowa State Extension says professional machines typically chew down 8 to 12 inches. Your [grinding depth](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/grinding-depth) depends on the machine you rent.

## What do I need to rent a grinder?

Expect to show identification and pay by card. The Barreto page says “A valid Driver’s License is required to rent” and that credit cards are accepted, no cash. The Toro page says a valid identification is required. Other rental companies set their own rules. See stump grinder rental for the term.

## What can go wrong with a rented stump grinder?

The main hazards are flying debris, kickback and the cutter wheel. The Dosko operator instructions posted by A Tool Shed Equipment Rentals list these:

Hazard

Manual text

Flying debris

“Debris can fly 75 ft in any direction out of the chute.”

Bystanders

“Make sure no children or bystanders are within 75 feet of stump grinding operation.”

Kickback

“Be prepared for machine ‘kickback’ when initially contacting the stump.”

Eye protection

“Always wear ANSI-approved and OSHA-compliant safety glasses with side shields and a full-face shield.”

Slopes

“Never attempt to cut on a slope exceeding 15 Degrees.”

The manual also says to “know location of buried electrical and other utility lines.” It is one product’s manual, so read the one that comes with the machine you rent. The guide [DIY stump removal vs hiring a pro](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/diy-stump-removal-vs-hiring-a-pro) covers digging, decay and the other do-it-yourself choices. ## Is renting cheaper than hiring a pro?

The rental fee alone can be lower than a quote, but the comparison is not fair until you add the items above. This guide has no verified local grinding price to set against the rental rates, so it will not claim a winner.

Iowa State Extension frames the choice this way: hiring an arborist to grind is “the quickest, easiest, and safest way,” and “the drawback to this method is its cost.” If time, risk and cleanup matter to you, ask for a free estimate and compare. ### Is renting a stump grinder cheaper than hiring a pro?
