# Stump grinding cost: what shapes the price and what to ask

Stump grinding cost depends mostly on stump width, measured at its widest point. Many pros price by the inch and add a minimum charge. Access, wood type, depth and cleanup change the total. Published guides show wide ranges, so a quote for your own stump is the only number that counts.

## Width drives price

Arborists charge by stump size, measured at the widest point. A wider stump means more wood to cut.

## Minimums are common

Cost guides report a minimum fee on most jobs, so a small stump may cost more per inch than a big one.

## Extras cost extra

Hauling away chips and filling the hole usually cost more than grinding alone.

## Ranges are wide

The cost guides checked for this page show different ranges. None is a quote.

## Quotes without a visit

Cincinnati Stump Grinding says it can usually give a free quote very quickly without an in-person visit.

## How much does stump grinding cost?

There is no single price. Cost guides report a typical job in the low hundreds of dollars, and the width of your stump decides where you land. Angi’s 2026 national guide, updated October 15, 2026, says most homeowners pay between $120 and $400, with an average of $250.

That figure is a national average from a cost guide. It is not a quote. Local ranges differ, and the sections below show how. For your own stump, the useful step is a quote: [Cincinnati Stump Grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/services/stump-grinding) grinds stumps in Dayton, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The business publishes no price list, and this page gives no price for it.

Iowa State University Extension names the main factor: “Arborists will charge by the size of the stump, measuring it at its widest point.” It also notes the trade-off. It calls grinding the quickest, easiest and safest way to remove a stump, and adds: “The drawback to this method is its cost.”

## How do pros price a stump: per inch, per stump, or by the hour?

Three methods show up in cost guides: by the inch of [stump diameter](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/stump-diameter), by the stump, or by the hour. Per-inch pricing is the one homeowners see most. Ask which method a quote uses before you compare two of them.

## Why does the same stump cost more in one yard than another?

Access, wood type, depth and cleanup change the work. Angi lists stump diameter, wood hardness and site accessibility as the biggest factors. Homeyou’s Dayton page says the cost depends on “how many stumps have to be removed, the size of the stump, and the location.”

Here is what each factor does, as the cost guides describe it.

Depth matters most when you plan to replant. Iowa State says professional grinding typically goes “down 8 to 12 inches.” Read [how deep stump grinding goes](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/how-deep-does-stump-grinding-go) before you ask for a deeper cut. The wood also matters. Read [pine, oak and maple stump grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/pine-oak-maple-stump-grinding) for how species change the job.

## What do people in Cincinnati, Dayton and Northern Kentucky say they paid?

Read the gaps with care. The Homeyou range tops out at $135, while the Angi national range runs to $400. Both the LawnStarter and Homeyou figures are for a medium stump. Your stump may be larger or harder to reach.

This guide found no Northern Kentucky price page it could open and check. For Northern Kentucky, the quote is the only evidence.

Homeowners also post prices in forum threads. Treat those as one person’s report on one stump in one year. A thread can show what someone was told. It cannot tell you what your stump will cost.

## What is a minimum charge and why do small stumps still cost money?

A minimum charge is the lowest price a company will take for a visit. The truck, the machine and the crew’s time are the same for a small stump as for a larger one. Angi says “nearly all contractors apply a minimum fee of $100 regardless of stump size.”

LawnStarter gives the reason for a higher first-stump price: “This higher price accounts for the initial setup and transportation of equipment.” That is why five small stumps in one yard can cost much less per stump than one stump alone. The [minimum charge guide](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/stump-grinding-minimum-charge) explains this in more detail. Ask about the minimum when you request your free estimate.

## Is grinding cheaper when the tree comes down at the same time?

Sometimes. Illinois Extension says “many tree companies offer stump grinding as an additional service charge when removing a tree.” Angi says a standard tree removal does not include stump grinding, and that a single company doing both jobs may save a second trip.

Tree removal is a separate job from stump grinding. The quote should list each one as its own line, so you can see what the stump costs. The [tree removal vs stump grinding prices guide](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/tree-removal-vs-stump-grinding-prices) shows what to look for. If you already have a stump, a stump-only quote avoids paying for work you do not need.

Public trees work differently. Cincinnati Parks Urban Forestry says that when a public tree is removed at a resident’s request, “the requesting party will be required to pay the appraised value of the tree, as well as the cost for removal and stump grinding, prior to permit approval.” Read [who grinds the stump in front of a Cincinnati house](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/blog/who-grinds-the-stump-in-front-of-my-cincinnati-house) for the city’s process.

## Can I get a price from photos?

Yes, for this business. Its Angi profile says: “we can usually provide one very quickly without an in-person visit.” Show the stump with something next to it for scale.

Put a tape measure or a familiar object next to the stump for scale. Angi’s guide advises: “Provide accurate height and trunk diameter measurements to help the pro plan equipment and labor.” The [photo quote post](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/blog/get-a-stump-grinding-quote-from-photos) lists what to send. Angi advises that, when possible, you get an in-person estimate from a professional who can view the stump and its location.

## What should I ask before I accept a quote?

Ask what the price covers. A low number that leaves out cleanup can end up costing more than a higher number that includes it. Use this checklist.

1. What stump width did you use, and where did you measure it?
2. Is that a per-inch price, a flat price or an hourly price?
3. Is there a minimum charge, and does my job reach it?
4. How deep will you grind?
5. What happens to the wood chips? Iowa State says most arborists do not remove them unless asked.
6. Is hauling away the chips, and filling the hole with [topsoil](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/topsoil), a separate line?
7. Are surface roots included? See [should you remove roots after stump grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/should-you-remove-roots-after-stump-grinding).
8. Is there an extra charge for tight access or a long walk from the truck?

Iowa State says that “most arborists will not remove this material unless it is requested,” and that “both of these services typically have an additional cost.” Cincinnati Stump Grinding says that if you would like the wood chips hauled away and replaced with fresh topsoil, it offers those services too. Ask about the price when you request your free estimate. The [chip haul-away and topsoil page](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/services/chip-haul-away-topsoil) explains the option.

If you plan a DIY job instead, compare the cost of a rental. See [stump grinder rental cost](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/stump-grinder-rental-cost) and [DIY stump removal vs hiring a pro](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/diy-stump-removal-vs-hiring-a-pro). To compare companies, read [how to choose a stump grinding company](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/how-to-choose-a-stump-grinding-company).

## Can a shallower grind or a different season lower the price?

Sometimes. Angi’s guide says surface-level grinding, which cuts only to the soil level, “works well with a stump that’s long dead or unlikely to send up new shoots, and the costs are lower for this service.” If you plan to plant over the spot, a surface cut may not fit your plan. Read [how deep stump grinding goes](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/how-deep-does-stump-grinding-go) first.

Timing can matter too. Angi says winter is usually the cheapest time for stump work, since demand drops in the coldest months, saving up to 20 percent. LawnStarter says the same, “around 20%.” Both are national guide figures. Ask a company whether it prices differently by season.

## What does a DIY job cost by comparison?

Renting a grinder replaces the labor charge with your own labor. Angi reports rental at $100 to $300 per day, while professional labor runs $200 to $500 in total. LawnStarter reports rentals of $178 to $364 per day, and says a DIY job can take one to three days.

Rental price is only part of the cost. Angi calls DIY grinding “hard labor” and “not recommended,” and says pros know how to avoid underground lines. See [stump grinder rental cost](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/stump-grinder-rental-cost) and [DIY stump removal vs hiring a pro](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/diy-stump-removal-vs-hiring-a-pro) before you choose.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does stump grinding cost?

It depends on the stump. Angi's 2026 national guide says most homeowners pay between $120 and $400, with an average of $250. Local pages show other ranges. Width, access, wood type and cleanup move the price, so ask for a quote on your own stump.

### Do stump grinders charge per inch?

Many do. Angi says stump grinding is priced by diameter inch, with most jobs running $2 to $5 per diameter inch. Per-inch pricing is common, not universal. Some pros price by the stump or by the hour, so ask which method a quote uses.

### Why is a small stump not much cheaper?

Most companies set a minimum charge. Angi says nearly all contractors apply a minimum fee of $100 regardless of stump size. The truck, the machine and the trip cost the same for a small stump, so the minimum can set the price.

### Does Cincinnati Stump Grinding publish prices?

No. The business publishes no price list or rate. It offers free quotes and says it can usually give one very quickly without an in-person visit. Call (513) 587-6772 or send photos, and ask what the quote includes.

### Does grinding cost more if I want the chips hauled away?

Usually yes. Iowa State Extension says most arborists do not remove the shavings or fill the hole unless asked, and both services typically cost extra. The business says it offers chip haul-away and fresh topsoil. Ask about it when you request your free estimate.

### Is it cheaper to grind a stump when the tree comes down?

It can be, but not always. Angi says a standard tree removal does not include stump grinding, and a bundle with one company may save on separate trips. Ask for each job as its own line on the quote.
