# Stump grinding near a house foundation: access, lines and what to ask

A stump near a house can be ground, but three things need checking first: whether the machine fits through your gate, where private lines and drains run, and what the company does to protect the wall. OHIO811 says private lines are the owner's and may need a private locator.

GuideUpdated October 26, 20265 min read

## Fit and access

A grinder maker says its track and wheel models fit through 36-inch gates. Measure yours.

## Private lines

OHIO811 lists downspout drain lines, septic lines and lines to a shed or lamp post as private utility lines.

## Not all marked

OHIO811 says not all utilities are registered, and private lines may need a locating service for hire.

## Ask about protection

The sources do not set a safe distance from a wall. Ask the company how it protects the foundation and siding.

## Can you grind a stump close to a house?

Often yes, but the job needs more checking than a stump in open lawn. None of the sources used for this guide sets a minimum distance between a stump and a wall. So the useful question is what the company does to work close in safely. Ask it, and get the answer in writing.

Three areas decide the job: whether the machine can reach the stump, what is buried nearby, and how the company protects the structure. The general process is in [how stump grinding works](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/how-stump-grinding-works).

Concern

What to check

What the sources say

Access

Gate width, steps, slopes

A maker says its track and wheel models fit through 36-inch gates.

Debris

Rocks and objects near the stump

A rental company says to clear them before grinding.

Private lines

Drains, septic, power to sheds or lamp posts

OHIO811 says these are the owner’s and may need a private locator.

Public lines

Gas, electric, water, telecom

OHIO811 and Kentucky 811 handle notification and marking.

Wall protection

Siding, windows, vents

No source used here sets a rule. Ask the company.

## How does the machine reach a stump by the house?

The machine has to get there. Vermeer, a stump cutter maker, says both its track and wheel models fit through 36-inch (91-centimeter) gates. Measure your narrowest gate and any path beside the house. Tell the company about steps, slopes and low roofs over walkways.

A stump by a wall can leave little room to swing the cutter wheel. Photos help the company plan. Send one wide shot from the street and one close shot that shows the wall, the stump and the gap between them. The post on [getting a quote from photos](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/blog/get-a-stump-grinding-quote-from-photos) covers what to include.

## What is buried near a foundation?

More than most owners expect. OHIO811 defines “private utility lines” as lines owned by the property owner that often run from the house to individual systems and structures on the property. Its examples include down spout drain lines, electric lines extended from the house to a shed, lamp post, landscaping lights, pavilion or other outdoor structure, and septic lines.

Those lines often start at the foundation. A [private utility line](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/private-utility-line) is not marked by public utility marking. OHIO811 says not all utilities are registered with it, and private lines may need to be marked by you or your excavator using a utility locating service for hire. A sump pump drain line is not named in that page, so ask your company and check your plumbing plans if you have them.

## What do OHIO811 and Kentucky 811 say about digging?

Their pages talk about digging and excavation, and they do not name stump grinding. This guide does not say the law requires an 811 call for it. Read the wording yourself:

OHIO811 FAQ

“To be clear, contact OHIO811 any time the soil is disturbed, like tree planting, landscaping and fences, installing a mailbox, leveling for a pool, and of course larger excavation tasks.”

Kentucky 811

“Kentucky’s Underground Facility Damage Prevention law requires everyone who digs to contact Kentucky 811 at least two full business days before breaking ground.”

KRS 367.4911(1)(a)

Notice “not less than two (2) full working days nor more than ten (10) full working days prior to commencing work.”

Ohio’s notice window, as OHIO811 quotes it from ORC 3781.28(A), is at least two working days but not more than sixteen calendar days before commencing excavation. See the Ohio glossary entry on [how Ohio defines excavation](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/excavation-ohio-law), the entries for [OHIO811](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/ohio811) and a [locate ticket](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/locate-ticket), and the full guide to [811 for stump grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/do-you-need-to-call-811-for-stump-grinding).

Whether a company calls 811 for a stump job is a question for that company. Ask about it when you request your free estimate.

## What if the stump is next to a deck, fence or step?

Say so before the visit. A stump pressed against a structure limits how the cutter wheel can sweep. The sources used here give no distance rules, so the company decides how to work. Ask these questions:

1. Which machine will you bring, and will it fit my gate?
2. How will you protect the wall, siding and windows from flying chips?
3. Do you grind right up to the wall, or stop a set distance away?
4. What happens if a drain or line is hit, and who pays?
5. Will you clean up chips next to the foundation?

Write the answers into the quote or an email. Ohio’s Attorney General advises that a home improvement contract include a clear statement explaining any contractor guarantee, warranty or oral promises. This advice is general and applies to any written agreement.

## What about insects near the stump and the foundation?

The University of Kentucky Entomology page on termites says swarms emerging from tree stumps, woodpiles and similar spots out in the yard are not necessarily cause for concern and do not automatically mean the house is infested. It says swarmers emerging next to the foundation or from abutting porches or patios are different: there is a good chance the home is infested as well.

This guide cannot diagnose insects. If you see swarmers next to your foundation, see the termite section of [do tree stumps attract termites](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/do-tree-stumps-attract-termites) and do not rely on this guide to diagnose insects.

## What happens to the hole next to the wall?

Grinding leaves a pile of chips in the hole. Ask the company how it will leave the area. The University of Illinois Extension recommends hauling off chipped stump debris and filling the hole with quality [topsoil](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/glossary/topsoil) before planting turf. Purdue Extension says there will be significant settling of the ground as the stump decays. Plan to check the spot and add soil. See [does the hole sink after stump grinding](https://cincystump.multisites.ai/guides/does-the-hole-sink-after-stump-grinding).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a stump be ground right next to a house?

Often a stump near a house can be ground, but none of the sources used here sets a minimum distance from a wall. Ask the company how it handles close work, how it protects siding and windows, and which machine it brings.

### Do I need to find lines before grinding near my foundation?

OHIO811 says private utility lines, such as downspout drain lines and septic lines, are owned by the property owner and may need to be marked by you or your excavator using a locating service for hire. Public utility marking does not cover them.

### Will grinding hurt my foundation?

The sources used here do not address foundation damage from grinding. Ask the company how it works close to a wall and what it does if something is hit. Get the answer in writing before the visit.

### What if the stump touches a deck, fence or step?

Tell the company before the visit and send photos. A stump pressed against a structure changes how the machine can reach it. Ask how the company plans to reach it and what it does to protect the structure.
