Soil

Sod

Sod is grass sold in rolled or cut strips with its roots and a thin layer of soil attached, laid over bare ground to make an instant lawn.

Sod is grass that was grown on a farm and cut into strips. Each strip has roots and a thin layer of soil attached. You lay the strips over prepared ground like carpet, and the lawn is green right away.

Purdue Extension says to plant the grass over a removed stump, preferably sod, although seed can work, to adequately cover the newly exposed area. Sod covers the area faster than seed and holds the soil in place.

Prepare the spot first. Remove chips, add topsoil, and leave a little extra for settling. Water sod often while the roots take hold. Seed costs less and takes longer. See can you plant grass after stump grinding.
