Debris shield

A debris shield is a guard or barrier placed around a grinding area to catch flying chips, rocks and soil and keep them off people, windows and cars.

A stump grinder throws chips, soil and small stones. A debris shield catches them. Some shields are guards fitted on the machine. Others are portable mesh or fabric barriers set up around the stump.

Shields help, but they do not replace distance. One equipment safety guide says most stump grinder manufacturers recommend a minimum exclusion zone of 50 feet in all directions from the cutting area. People, pets and parked cars should stay clear while the stump grinder runs.

The operator also wears eye and ear protection. If you plan to do stump grinding yourself with a rental, read the manual and ask the rental yard about guards before you start. See how to get ready for stump grinding day.
