Stump removal

Stump removal means getting rid of a tree stump, and often its main roots, by grinding it, digging it out, or letting it rot over time.

Stump removal is the broad term for getting a stump out of the way. It covers several methods, and they differ in effort, cost and what they leave behind.

Grinding cuts the wood into chips. Digging pulls the stump out with roots attached. Iowa State Extension says digging out the stump is very labor-intensive, but it is quick and can be done on smaller tree stumps, those less than 12 or so inches in diameter. Natural decay needs no machine but takes years.

Stump grinding is one kind of stump removal. Many people use the two phrases for the same job, but a ground stump leaves roots and chips behind. See stump grinding vs stump removal.
