Subterranean termite

A subterranean termite is a soil-dwelling termite. University of Kentucky entomologists call these termites serious pests of buildings that usually warrant attention by a professional.

The University of Kentucky Entomology Department describes subterranean (soil-dwelling) termites as serious pests of buildings. It says they usually warrant attention by a professional. The department also says termites primarily feed on wood, and that although termites can injure living trees and shrubs, they more often are a secondary invader of woody plants already in decline.

A stump is dead wood, so homeowners often ask whether it draws termites. The university page does not answer that question, so this page does not either. For what is known, read the guide on whether tree stumps attract termites. Suspected termites in a building call for a professional.
