Tracked stump grinder
A tracked stump grinder rides on rubber or steel tracks that spread weight and grip soft or sloped ground, while a wheeled grinder rides on tires.
A stump grinder can ride on tracks or on tires. The choice changes where the machine can safely work.
Bandit says track grinders provide better traction in wet, muddy, or soft conditions and offer more stability on uneven terrain. The same guide says rubber tire grinders are lighter, easier to tow between job sites, and cause less damage to finished surfaces. Barreto says wheeled units are not ideal on slopes but suit tight spaces where they can fit through narrow openings.
Steep yards and soft ground favor tracks. Narrow gates favor smaller wheeled or walk-behind units. Either type can damage a lawn if the ground is wet, so the site matters as much as the machine. A turf-friendly stump grinder is built to limit that.
