Cut-stump treatment
A cut-stump treatment is cutting a shrub off close to the ground and applying herbicide to the cut surface, which Ohio State University describes for controlling bush honeysuckle.
Ohio State University calls cut-stump treatments a very effective method for many undesirable woody shrubs, including bush honeysuckle. The shrub is cut off close to the ground. Herbicide goes on the cut surfaces with a spray bottle, paintbrush, roller or wicking device.
OSU says timing and carrier matter. Herbicides carried in water go on the outer third of the stump's cut surface within minutes of the cut. Oil-soluble products can go on later if the stump is dry and not frozen. OSU also says to avoid spring sap flow. Always follow the product label. OSU notes its comments do not replace the label and the Safety Data Sheet. This page is not a treatment plan. See honeysuckle and resprouting for context.
