Fast and low effort

Iowa State Extension says a stump is gone within hours and the work needs little manual labor.

Cost is the drawback

Iowa State Extension names cost as the main drawback of hiring a pro to grind.

Waiting is cheap

Natural decay costs little but can take 10 or more years, per Iowa State Extension.

Renting has its own cost

Home Depot rental pages seen on October 26, 2026 listed daily grinder rates before fuel, travel and your time.

Is stump grinding worth it?

Grinding is worth it when you want the stump gone quickly, with little work and little risk. Iowa State Extension says “the quickest, easiest, and safest way to remove a tree stump is by hiring an arborist to grind it out.” The stump “is gone within a matter of hours and the process requires little manual labor.”

The same page names the cost: “The drawback to this method is its cost.” So the real question is what your time, your back and your risk are worth against that cost. Stump grinding is not the only choice, so the table below sets the options side by side.

Option What the sources say Main trade-off
Hire a grinder Quickest, easiest and safest; gone in hours (Iowa State) Cost
Rent a grinder Daily rates are listed by rental centers (Home Depot) Your labor, transport, safety risk
Dig it out Quick but very labor-intensive; suits stumps under about 12 inches (Iowa State) Hard work; not practical on large stumps
Let it decay Cheap, easy and safe; can take 10+ years (Iowa State) Patience
Leave it Shelters wildlife; check it regularly (Iowa State) The stump stays

What do you get for the price?

You get the stump and its large nearby roots chewed to chips. Iowa State Extension says grinders work “typically down 8 to 12 inches.” What stays is a pile of wood chips in the hole.

Iowa State also says “most arborists will not remove this material unless it is requested” and that the hole “will only be filled if requested.” Both services “typically have an additional cost.” Illinois Extension says that deeper grinding often costs more. Plan for the whole job, not only the cut.

Cincinnati Stump Grinding states on Angi that “if you’d like those wood chips hauled away and replaced with fresh topsoil, we offer those services too.” See chip haul-away and topsoil for how that step works. The guide on what to do after stump grinding lists the repair steps.

How does it compare with renting a grinder?

The rental fee is only part of the cost. Home Depot’s rental page for the Toro Compact Stump Grinder 22600, opened October 26, 2026 with the Ellsworth, Maine store (#2408) selected, listed $108 for 4 hours and $154 per day. The page says “Local store prices may vary from those displayed,” so a Cincinnati area store may differ.

Add the work that the fee leaves out:

  1. Pick up and return the machine. The same page lists it at 103 lb.
  2. Buy fuel and safety gear.
  3. Trim the stump and clear stones around it.
  4. Grind, rake out the chips and fill the hole.

The page for that grinder lists a maximum below-grade cut of 10 inches, so a large stump may need a bigger machine, which costs more per day. The guide on stump grinder rental cost has the full table and the risks. For safety, read DIY stump removal vs hiring a pro first.

When is grinding not worth it?

Grinding may not be worth it when the stump poses no risk and you have a use for it. Iowa State Extension suggests leaving stumps in isolated areas where there is little risk to property or people, and says they can become garden features. Illinois Extension calls leaving a stump “an ecologically valuable option.”

Grinding may also not be worth it for a very small stump you can dig out yourself. Iowa State says digging suits stumps “less than 12 or so inches in diameter,” though Illinois Extension would not go much over a 6-inch trunk by hand.

The guide is stump grinding necessary covers the leave-it choice in more detail.

What does grinding cost in Cincinnati, Dayton and Northern Kentucky?

None of the sources opened for this guide publish a local grinding price, so this page gives none. Iowa State Extension says arborists “will charge by the size of the stump, measuring it at its widest point.” That is why quotes depend on stump diameter.

Cincinnati Stump Grinding states on Angi that for a free quote, “we can usually provide one very quickly without an in-person visit.” To get a number for your stump, send photos with the stump size. The guides stump grinding cost and how to measure a stump for a quote explain what to include.
