Public tree work permit

A public tree work permit is city permission to prune, remove or plant a tree on public land, such as the permit Cincinnati requires for trees in the right-of-way.

Cincinnati Parks says Cincinnati Municipal Code Chapter 743-7 requires you to obtain a Public Tree Work Permit prior to conducting work on or near a public tree, or planting in the right-of-way. The stated purpose is to keep public trees healthy and pedestrians safe.

The permit goes to your district urban forester, who reviews it and inspects the tree. Cincinnati Parks adds that if the tree is removed because of the request, the requesting party pays the appraised value of the tree plus removal and stump grinding costs before approval. Covington, Kentucky, has a similar Street Tree Permit. See street tree and right-of-way. The post on Cincinnati street tree removal permit cost has more.
