Urban forestry

Urban forestry is the care of the trees within a city, on public and private land. Dayton defines an urban forest as all trees within a city.

The City of Dayton defines an urban forest as all trees within a city, across all types of land, both public and private. Cincinnati Parks Urban Forestry says its team is responsible for the maintenance of all City street trees, or any trees in a right-of-way.

So city urban forestry offices usually manage street trees and trees in the right-of-way. Private yard trees are generally not in their care. Dayton notes that 70-80% of its tree canopy is on private property. If a stump sits on public land, ask the city office before hiring anyone. The guide on who owns the stump on the tree lawn explains the first step.
