How long does stump grinding take?
Grinding one stump takes hours at most, and often less. Iowa State Extension says the stump is gone within a matter of hours and the process requires little manual labor. EquipmentShare, an equipment rental company, says the time required can vary from 15 minutes to several hours, depending on the stump size and wood hardness.
No source gives one fixed time, because stumps differ. Use the range as a guide and ask the company for an estimate based on photos of your stump. The step-by-step process is in how stump grinding works.
| Part of the visit | What happens | Time source |
|---|---|---|
| Grinding one stump | The wheel sweeps and lowers until the stump is below the soil line. | 15 minutes to several hours (EquipmentShare); within a matter of hours (Iowa State Extension). |
| Clearing the area | Rocks, debris and other objects near the stump are moved. | No time stated in the sources. |
| Cleanup | Remaining chips and debris are cleaned up from the area. | No time stated in the sources. |
| Chip haul-away and topsoil | Only if you request them. | No time stated in the sources. |
What makes the job take longer?
Size and hardness are the two named factors. A stump with a wide stump diameter takes more passes. Iowa State Extension says arborists measure a stump at its widest point when they charge, which tells you that diameter is the key measure. Learn how in how stump diameter is measured. EquipmentShare also names wood hardness as a factor.
Other things can also add time. The sources do not give minutes for these, so treat them as questions to ask:
- More than one stump in the same yard.
- A stump far from the street or behind a gate.
- A cut deeper than the usual 8 to 12 inches. See how deep stump grinding goes.
- Rocks, wire or other objects near or in the stump.
- Large surface roots you want ground as well.
How does access change the time?
The machine has to reach the stump. Vermeer, a stump cutter maker, says both its track and wheel models fit through 36-inch (91-centimeter) gates. A gate narrower than the machine can limit which machine the company can bring. Measure your narrowest gate and tell the company.
Slopes, steps, fences and planting beds also matter. Photos help. Include a wide shot showing the route from the street to the stump, plus a close photo of the stump with something for scale. The post on getting a quote from photos lists what to send.
What happens during setup and cleanup?
Setup comes first. EquipmentShare says to clear the surrounding area of rocks, debris and other objects that could damage the grinder, then lift the grinder wheel a few inches above the stump and start grinding. Cleanup comes last, and the wood chips are the main thing to deal with. EquipmentShare says to clean up any remaining wood chips and debris from the area.
If you want chips removed, ask. Iowa State Extension says most arborists will not remove the shavings unless requested, and that this typically costs extra. Chip haul-away and topsoil are covered in after stump grinding.
Does utility marking add days to the schedule?
It can, if a company or an owner decides to request marking first. Marking happens before the visit and not during it. OHIO811 says it must be notified at least 2 working days, not including the day of the notification, but no more than 16 calendar days, before any digging. Kentucky 811 says Kentucky’s law requires everyone who digs to contact it at least two full business days before breaking ground.
These pages do not name stump grinding, so this guide does not say the law requires a call for it. If a call is made, plan for the waiting period. OHIO811 also says not all utilities are registered with it and that private lines may need to be marked by you or your excavator. How long does it take to get a quote?
It can be quick. On its Angi profile, Cincinnati Stump Grinding states about its free quotes: “we can usually provide one very quickly without an in-person visit.” Send photos and your address to get started. A company that quotes from photos still may need a visit when the stump is hard to judge, so ask about it when you request your free estimate.
Compare the quote time with the grinding time. A quote in minutes and a grind in hours are separate parts of the same job. The Ohio and Kentucky Attorneys General both advise getting at least three written estimates, so allow a few days if you want to compare. See how to choose a stump grinding company.
How can you speed up the visit?
You cannot change how fast the wheel cuts, but you can remove delays. Use this short list before the crew arrives:
- Clear toys, hoses, pots and furniture from around the stump.
- Open gates and move cars away from the route.
- Mark sprinkler heads and any private lines you know about.
- Send photos so the company brings a machine that fits.
- Say whether you want chips hauled away or left.
The full checklist is in how to get ready for stump grinding day.
What should you ask about timing?
Ask the company for specifics, since no source sets one time for every job. Useful questions are:
- How long will the crew be on site for my stump?
- Is there an arrival window, or an exact time?
- Does that time include cleanup and any chip haul-away?
- What delays the job, and how is the schedule changed if it rains?
Write the answers into the estimate. A stated window is easier to plan around than a vague “sometime that day.” Plan to be home for the first minutes of the visit so you can point out the stump, the gate and any lines you know about.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to grind a stump?
Iowa State Extension says the stump is gone within a matter of hours. EquipmentShare, an equipment rental company, says the time can vary from 15 minutes to several hours, depending on stump size and wood hardness. A small, soft stump falls near the short end.
What makes stump grinding take longer?
Larger stumps, harder wood and deeper cuts take longer. EquipmentShare names stump size and wood hardness as the two main factors. Hard-to-reach stumps, more stumps in one visit and cleanup you request also add time to the visit.
Is the grinding time the same as the appointment time?
No. Grinding is one step. The crew also arrives, looks at the stump, clears rocks and debris from the area, and cleans up chips. Ask the company how long it plans to be on site when you request your quote.
Can the whole job happen in one day?
Sources describe grinding a single stump in hours, not days. Whether a company schedules the quote, the visit and any chip haul-away on the same day is a question for that company. Ask about it when you request your free estimate.
