Stump grinding minimum charge: what it covers and what to ask

A minimum charge is the lowest price a company takes for a stump grinding visit. Angi's 2026 guide says nearly all contractors apply a minimum fee of $100 regardless of stump size. The fee covers setup and travel. Several stumps in one visit usually cost less per stump.

Lowest price per visit

A minimum charge is the least a company takes to bring the machine to your yard.

Setup is the reason

LawnStarter says the first-stump price covers initial setup and transport of equipment.

More stumps, lower average

Cost guides report that added stumps in one visit cost less each than the first.

Ask for it up front

A minimum is easy to miss. Ask whether one applies before you compare quotes.

What is a minimum charge for stump grinding?

It is the lowest price a company will take to come to your property and grind. If the per-inch math gives a lower number, the minimum applies instead. Angi’s 2026 national cost guide, updated October 15, 2026, says: “Nearly all contractors apply a minimum fee of $100 regardless of stump size.”

That $100 is a national cost-guide figure. It is not a price from Cincinnati Stump Grinding, which publishes no price list or minimum. The business offers free quotes. Ask about a minimum when you request your free estimate.

A minimum works with per-inch pricing. A minimum charge sets the floor, and the per-inch rate sets the price once the stump is wide enough. See the per-inch cost guide for the math.

Why do small stumps still cost money?

The trip and setup cost the same for a small stump as for a big one. LawnStarter’s cost guide, modified October 5, 2026, says the first stump costs more because “this higher price accounts for the initial setup and transportation of equipment.” The company still moves a machine to your yard, sets up and cleans up.

Grinding time is the part that changes with size. Setup is the part that does not. A minimum charge is how a company covers the fixed part.

Iowa State University Extension, for its part, notes that the cost of professional grinding is its main drawback, and says arborists charge by stump size. Read the stump grinding cost guide for the other cost factors.

What do several stumps cost compared with one?

Cost guides report a lower average per stump when you grind more than one in a single visit. The fixed cost of the trip is shared.

Number of stumps Angi’s 2026 minimum cost, per its table
1 stump $100 to $150
2 stumps $140 to $175
3 stumps $180 to $250
4 stumps $220 to $325
5 stumps $260 to $400

Source: Angi, “Stump Grinding Cost [2026 Data],” updated October 15, 2026. The same page says contractors often charge $100 to $150 for the first stump and only $40 to $75 for each added one. LawnStarter reports that added stumps run $37 to $70 each.

Use these as national guide figures only. They show a pattern, not a local rate. The pattern is that a yard with three stumps does not cost three times a yard with one.

Does a stump’s size ever beat the minimum?

Yes, on wide stumps. Once the width times the rate passes the minimum, the rate sets the price. Angi’s table shows averages of $148 to $220 for a 24-inch stump, against $118 to $130 for a 6-inch stump. The jump most likely comes from width, not from the minimum.

Measure before you call. A pro may count the root flare, which is the flared base, as part of the width. The DoorstepHQ operator blog advises measuring “at the widest point of the root flare at ground level, not at the trunk cut.” See how to measure a stump for a quote.

What should I ask about the minimum?

Ask for it in plain words. A quote that lists only a total can hide the minimum. These questions make it visible.

  1. Is there a minimum charge for a visit?
  2. Is my stump under or over the minimum?
  3. If I have more than one stump, what is the price for each?
  4. Does the minimum include hauling away the chips, or is that a separate line?
  5. Is there an added fee for tight access?

Iowa State Extension says most arborists do not remove the shavings or fill the hole unless asked, and that both typically cost extra. Cincinnati Stump Grinding says it offers chip haul-away and fresh topsoil. Ask about the price of those services when you request your free estimate. See what to do with stump grindings.

Can I avoid the minimum?

You cannot remove it, but you can get more value from it. Group your stumps into one visit. If a neighbor also has a stump, ask each company whether a second job at the same visit changes the price. Do not assume it will.

Do not choose a company by the lowest minimum alone. A low minimum with extra lines for depth, roots and cleanup can total more than a higher all-in price. Compare the same scope in every quote. The guide to choosing a stump grinding company lists what to compare.

Does the season change the minimum?

It may change the price. Angi says winter is usually the cheapest time for stump work, with savings up to 20 percent as demand for tree services drops. LawnStarter gives the same figure of around 20 percent. These are national guide statements, not a rule for any one company. Ask whether a minimum changes by season.

Angi also lists extra fees that can come beyond a minimum: some pros charge $50 per hour for hard access, and others a flat fee of up to $200 for a challenging site. Debris removal is a further charge. Angi puts it at $50 to $200, or $2 to $4 per diameter inch. A clear quote shows each of these as its own line.

What does a minimum mean for a neighbor or a second job?

A second stump in the same yard shares the trip, so its price is lower. A stump at a neighbor’s address is a separate property and may count as a separate job. This guide found no source that says how a company treats two addresses. Ask before you assume a shared visit.

The same goes for a return trip. If a job is split across two days, ask whether the minimum applies once or twice. Get the answer in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is a minimum charge for stump grinding?

It is the lowest price a company will charge for a visit, no matter how small the stump. Angi's 2026 guide says nearly all contractors apply a minimum fee of $100 regardless of stump size. A company's own minimum may differ, so ask for it.

Why do small stumps still cost money?

The truck, trailer and machine come to your yard for any size. LawnStarter says the higher first-stump price accounts for the initial setup and transportation of equipment. A small stump saves a little grinding time but not the trip.

Do I pay less per stump if I have several?

Usually. Angi reports that contractors often charge $100 to $150 for the first stump and $40 to $75 for each added one. LawnStarter reports a similar pattern. Ask for one quote that lists every stump.

Does Cincinnati Stump Grinding have a minimum charge?

The business publishes no price list, rate or minimum, so this page cannot say. It offers free quotes and says it can usually give one very quickly without an in-person visit. Ask about a minimum when you request your free estimate.
