Stump grinding cost per inch: what it means and how to check it

Per-inch pricing multiplies a rate by the stump's width at its widest point. Angi's 2026 guide says most jobs run $2 to $5 per diameter inch. A minimum fee often sets the price for small stumps, so the per-inch rate matters most on wide ones. Ask which method a quote uses.

Rate times width

Per-inch pricing multiplies a rate by the stump's diameter in inches.

Widest point counts

Iowa State Extension says arborists measure the stump at its widest point.

A minimum can override

On small stumps the minimum fee can be higher than the per-inch math.

Rates are reports

The $2 to $5 range is from a 2026 national cost guide, not a quote.

What does “cost per inch” mean for stump grinding?

It means a company multiplies a set rate by the stump’s width in inches. A 20-inch stump at a $3 rate would be $60 by this math. The rate is only part of the price, because most companies also set a minimum.

Iowa State University Extension describes the method: “Arborists will charge by the size of the stump, measuring it at its widest point.” Angi’s 2026 national cost guide, updated October 15, 2026, puts numbers on it: “Stump grinding is priced by diameter inch, with most jobs running $2 to $5 per diameter inch.” LawnStarter, in a page modified October 5, 2026, reports the same $2 to $5 range for companies that price by diameter.

These are national guide figures. They are not quotes, and they are not prices for Cincinnati Stump Grinding, which publishes no price list. For the full picture, start with the stump grinding cost guide.

How do I measure a stump to work out the cost?

Measure across the widest point, in inches. Use a flexible tape. The stump diameter is the number a per-inch rate is applied to.

Where you measure matters. A tree service blog for operators, DoorstepHQ, says: “Measure at the widest point of the root flare at ground level, not at the trunk cut.” The same page says the cut face is almost always narrower than the actual flare. Ask where a quote measures. The step-by-step measuring guide covers oval stumps, height and photos. The root flare is the flared base where the trunk meets the roots.

Step What to do
1 Find the widest line across the stump
2 Measure it in inches with a flexible tape
3 Note whether you measured at the cut or at ground level
4 Write down the height above the ground
5 Take a photo with the tape in view

How does the per-inch math work on real stump sizes?

Multiply the width by the rate, then compare the result to the minimum. The table below applies the $2 to $5 range from the guides above to four widths. The last column is Angi’s own 2026 table of average costs for the same widths.

Stump width Rate times width ($2 to $5) Angi’s average cost for that size
6 inches $12 to $30 $118 to $130
12 inches $24 to $60 $124 to $160
18 inches $36 to $90 $136 to $190
24 inches $48 to $120 $148 to $220

The columns do not match. The arithmetic gives a number far below Angi’s averages. That gap is a sign that something besides the per-inch rate sets the price on these sizes, most likely the minimum fee. This is a reading of the two figures, not a statement from Angi.

Angi states the minimum directly: “Nearly all contractors apply a minimum fee of $100 regardless of stump size.” Read the minimum charge guide for how that works.

Why is there a minimum beyond the rate?

Because a visit has fixed costs. LawnStarter says the first-stump price “accounts for the initial setup and transportation of equipment.” A small stump needs the same truck, trailer and machine as a large one.

For a single narrow stump, the minimum usually decides the price. For a wide stump, the per-inch rate takes over. The crossover depends on the company. Ask for both numbers. A minimum charge is the floor under the rate.

What else can change the price besides inches?

Several things, according to the guides. Angi names wood hardness, site access, stump condition and number of stumps. Illinois Extension adds depth: “Often, the deeper you want a stump ground out, the more it will cost you.”

  • Wood type. Angi says hardwoods like oak, walnut and maple often add a charge. See pine, oak and maple stump grinding.
  • Access. Angi says some pros charge $50 per hour for extra labor on hard sites, and others a flat fee of up to $200.
  • Cleanup. Iowa State says most arborists leave the shavings, and filling the hole costs extra. Angi reports debris removal priced at $2 to $4 per diameter inch.
  • Number of stumps. LawnStarter says each added stump costs less than the first.

What local price reports use a per-inch rate?

This guide could not open any Cincinnati, Dayton or Northern Kentucky page that states a local per-inch rate. LawnStarter lists $118 to $210 for one medium stump in Cincinnati, and Homeyou lists $74 to $135 for one medium stump in Dayton (page updated October 24, 2026). Neither gives a rate per inch.

Homeowners post per-inch rates in forum threads, but those could not be verified for this guide. Treat any per-inch figure you see online as one person’s report, with the year and place unknown until you check.

How do I check a per-inch quote?

Do the math yourself. The example below uses made-up numbers to show the steps. It is not a price from any company.

Step Example
Measured width 20 inches
Rate the company states $3 per inch (example only)
Rate times width 20 times $3 = $60
Company’s minimum $100 (example only)
Price you should expect The higher of the two, so $100

If a quote is higher than this math, ask what is added. Depth, hardwood and access can add to the rate. LawnStarter says hardwoods such as oak, maple and walnut can add $50 to $150 per stump. Angi says old, rotten stumps cost less because they grind more easily.

Ask for the line items in writing: rate, width used, minimum, depth, and cleanup. Compare two quotes only when they use the same width and depth.

Frequently asked questions

How much is stump grinding per inch?

Angi's 2026 national cost guide says most jobs run $2 to $5 per diameter inch. LawnStarter reports the same range for companies that charge by diameter. These are guide figures, not quotes. A local company may charge more or less, so ask for a quote.

How do I figure the cost of my stump?

Measure the stump at its widest point, then multiply by the rate a company gives you. If the result is below the company's minimum charge, the minimum may apply instead. Ask for the rate, the minimum and the total in writing.

Do all stump grinders charge per inch?

No. Cost guides also report flat prices per stump and hourly rates. LawnStarter says some pros charge by the hour, typically $125 to $200. Ask which method a quote uses, because a per-inch rate and an hourly rate are not easy to compare.

Does Cincinnati Stump Grinding charge per inch?

The business publishes no price list, rate or minimum. It says it offers free quotes and can usually give one very quickly without an in-person visit. Call (513) 587-6772 or send photos, then ask how the quote is figured.
